Let’s talk again about Denmark, its monarchs and UNESCO sites.
Very close to the capital city Copenhagen, on the island of Zealand (Sjælland), it is Roskilde. There you can visit a gorgeous cathedral. It was built with red bricks, the façade is very simple, it is very big but this is masked by the buildings near the cathedral, but everything inside is to wow you. Roskilde Domkirke is a Lutheran church built in the 12th and 13th centuries. The style is French gothic. The cathedral is a major tourist attraction, bringing in over 125,000 visitors annually. Since 1995, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Roskilde was named the new capital of Denmark by King Harald Bluetooth around the year 960. The king had previously resided in Jelling. Soon after he became Bishop of Roskilde in 1157, Absalon began to build the cathedral. When Margrethe I died in 1412, she was buried in her family's chapel at Sorø Klosterkirke. But the following year Bishop Peder Jensen Lodehat, who had been the queen's chancellor and religious advisor, brought her body to Roskilde Cathedral. It is the main burial site for the monarchs of Denmark from the 15th century. You will like the marble decorations, the sculptures, the beautiful stained glasses. In 1554 a new organ built by Herman Raphaelis was donated to the cathedral for services and it is still in use today.
