A Rare Postcard from Falkland Islands or Islas Malvinas

I just got a rare postcard from Falkland Islands. The archipelago consists of two main islands and hundreds of small ones and it is located in the south Antarctic Ocean. In England it is called Falkland Islands, in Argentina/Spain it is Islas Malvinas. The islands were a subject of dispute between Spain and now Argentina (because previous Argentina (Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata) was a Spanish territory) and England. The French navigator Louis Antoine de Bougainville founded port Louis, on the Eastern Island in 1764. British captain John Byron explored and claimed Saunders Island on West Falkland, where he named the harbor Port Egmont and a settlement was constructed in 1766. Unaware of the French presence he claimed the island group for King George III. Spain acquired the French colony and placed the colony under a governor subordinate to the Buenos Aires colonial administration. In 1774, economic pressures leading up to the American Revolutionary War forced Great Britain to withdraw from many overseas settlements. Upon withdrawal the British left behind a plaque asserting her continued claim. Spain maintained its governor until 1806 that, on his departure, left behind a plaque asserting Spanish claims. The conflicts culminate in 1982 with a war between UK and Argentina. Executive authority is vested in the Queen and is exercised by the Governor on her behalf. The Governor is also responsible for the administration of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, as these islands have no native inhabitants. The most popular reason to visit is for the scenic beauty and the flora and fauna. Bird and marine species are the most prevalent fauna and include five species of penguin, four species of seal, albatross, petrels, the Falkland Flightless Steamer duck (Logger Duck), other duck species, geese, hawks and falcons. The Striated Caracara (Johnny Rook) is a rare bird of prey found only on the Falkland Islands and some islands off Cape Horn. Porpoises and dolphins are often sighted with the occasional sighting of whales. The only international carriers to use this airport are LanChile on a weekly flight from Santiago de Chile via Punta Arenas and the UK Royal Air Force who carry commercial passengers direct from RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire in the United Kingdom. Flights from the UK last eighteen hours including a stop on Ascension Island en route.
