A Place Created for the Gods

I have told you about Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey (see Scaling (like in dentistry) the Acropolis) and in the same episode were a really beautiful encounter with Nana Mouskouri at Epidaurus. For the one that have no idea who she is, I have to tell you that is one of the best singers of the last 50 years. She has sold over 400 billion albums and has more than 230 gold and platinum albums worldwide, making her a candidate for the best-selling female recording artist of all time. She also represented Luxembourg (not Greece) in Eurovision Song Contest 1963 in London. Let’s get back to the encounter with Joanna: they have met at Epidaurus and Nana has sung Ave Maria while Joanna was standing in the last row of seats. By this they have shown the great acoustic of the marvelous building carved in stone of the mountain. Joanna felt like the gods have sung. The few travelers at that moment are so lucky; I can even say that they are loved by gods. The place is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List from 1988.

V-am povestit despre Joanna Lumley şi odiseea ei grecească (citiţi şi Detartrajul de pe Acropolis) şi tot din acel episod mi-a plăcut (şi am şi vedere cu acel loc), întâlnirea ei cu Nana Mouskouri la Epidaurus. Pentru cei care nu ştiu, Nana Mouskouri este una din cele mai mari cântăreţe ale acestei planete. A vândut mai bine de 400 milioane de albume şi deţine 230 discuri de aur şi platină. Deşi din Grecia, a reprezentat Luxemburgul la Eurovision în 1963 la Londra. În documentarul Joannei a cântat Ave Maria pentru a demonstra acustica perfectă a amfiteatrului săpat în munte. Joanna a stat pe ultimele trepte şi a fost atât de emoţionată încât a spus că parcă au cântat zeii. Publicul restrâns, format din câteva zeci de turişti au aplaudat frumoasa reprezentaţie. E ceva unic şi dacă ai noroc să te afli acolo, în amfiteatrul zeilor, când o vedetă cântă, înseamnă că zeii te iubesc. Locul este inclus în Patrimoniul UNESCO din 1988.

Scaling (like in dentistry) the Acropolis

Last night I have watched Joanna Lumley’s Greek Odyssey and I have to tell you some things. First I have to say that I’m a big fan of her because of her Patsy Stone role from the British sitcom Absolutely Fabulous, one of the best sitcoms ever, produced by the genius of Jennifer Saunders. Second thing about Joanna is that she was a Bond Girl in the movie On Her Majesty's Secret Service, so she was a very beautiful woman. Her first stop in the Greek Odyssey was the Acropolis of Athens and most fascinating thing for me as a dentist was that they use the scaling method to clean the marble. Now, the Acropolis is in restoration and the project is very big. The marble they use now to replace the old peaces is white so we can see the parts that are missing. Of course it is on the lists of UNESCO and you have to see such an iconic building that lasted more than 2000 years. As in case of the Colloseum of Rome, Acropolis suffered a lot in time: it was used as the garrison headquarters of the Turkish army, it was damage during the 1687 siege by the Venetians and it still suffers from the great polluted air of today Athens. Spania a mai rămas până în 1806, iar la retragerea lor în Argentina au lăsat şi ei o placă ce atestă că insulele le aparţin. Conflictele au continuat, dar mai serios a fost în 1982 când între Argentina şi Marea Britanie a fost un război în zonă. Astăzi, guvernatorul britanic al Insulelor Falkland, este şi guvernator al insulelor nepopulate South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. De ce să vizitaţi un loc aşa de îndepărtat?
